When you can’t pay your mortgage or your taxes or your rent, you become homeless. More and more, our politics is designed to remove safety nets and punish the unsuccessful. The people Donald J. Trump calls ‘losers’ aren’t just homeless. They’re often hungry and ill. And they are often victims of street crime.
The fear of running out of money is very great in the US. The stronger that fear gets, the fewer people want to pay taxes to keep a safety net in place. It’s a deliberate, vicious cycle.
