Defying congressional Republicans, President Obama will defer the deportation of the undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and will also prioritize the deportation of criminals.

After 6 years of bitter (and divisive) run around with congressional Republicans over immigration, U.S. President Barack Obama acts unilaterally to shield 5,000,000 (5 million) immigrants, including many children, from deportation.

Obama’s executive action:
— Delays the deportation of the undocumented parents of children who are in the country legally.
— Protects children brought to this country illegally before January 1, 2010.
— Directs immigration and Department of Homeland Security officials and personnel to concentrate on deporting criminals and those who pose a threat to national security.

Obama says this executive action does not amount to amnesty, because it does not provide for a path to legalization.
