What’s it like to disappear for years without telling your friends or family your whereabouts?

I did this in 1995 and it was the best decision I've ever made.

For clarity, I chose this path to escape a hopelessly toxic childhood and create a safe place to raise my family.  While I've struggled with this decision, I know that it was the right one for me.  My life, and the lives of my wife and children, are immeasurably better for it.
